CFD analysis is based on the Navier-Stokes equation and serves to simulate fluid motion.
The accuracy of the simulation largely depends on the realism of the model, approximations and assumptions, experimental validation, and available computing resources.
CFD is applied to a wide range of research and engineering problems in many fields of study and industries, including aerodynamics and space analysis, hypersonics, weather simulation, natural sciences and environmental engineering, industrial system design and analysis, biological engineering, fluid flow and heat.
It is very often used in industry to check different product design scenarios and how they affect fluid flow through and/or around the product.
By applying the results obtained by CFD analysis, it is possible to optimize the product, i.e. choose a shape that will satisfy the initial requirements to the greatest extent possible (e.g. the most efficient cooling in internal combustion engines, the smallest pressure drop in the pipeline, etc.)
